Maldivians have their own language, “Dhivehi” and their own script called “Thaana”. When spoken Dhivehi sounds similar to Sinhala, the language of the neighbouring island of Sri Lanka. When written from right to left across a page, it seems similar in appearance and characters to Arabic. Maldivians welcome efforts from foreigners trying to speak their language and make willing teachers.
