| History
Located
on ancient maritime trade routes, the Maldives has attracted visitors
from the time man first sailed to explore and to trade. Early
mariners, who landed in the Maldives, either by accident or design,
were captivated by the islands and many settled in this tropical
haven of peace.
Maldivians have been
unable to trace their origins to one single race. The nation has
evolved into a smiling, friendly and welcoming people who form a
tight knit and close community. The people were converted to Islam
in the 12th century and the islands were occupied by the Portuguese
for 17 years in the 16th century. In 1887 Maldives attained the
status of a ‘British Protectorate’ and gained full independence
in 1965. The Maldives became a Republic in 1968.
