Dive Sites 

Kani Corner 
Rating:    Intermediate 
Location:    North-East corner of Kanifinolhu, 5 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  Kani Corner is one of the most exciting drift-dives in the atoll. The outer-reef slopes to a sandy bottom at 30-35 meters, and from there into the channel the reef-profile changes to a drop-off between 5-20 meters with caves and overhangs.   
Type of dive:   Drift-dive around a corner. 
Depth range:    10-30 meters. 
Marine life:  Rich coral life, especially soft coral.  There are turtles and the fish seen here vary from oriental sweet lips among the coral-blocks, white tip reef sharks, eagle rays, mantas, snappers and napoleons wrasses to pelagics such as great barracuda, tuna, jacks and more. 
Instructor’s comment:  One of the best dive sites just around the corner! 

Aquarium 
Rating:    Intermediate 
Location:   South-East corner of Lhohifushi, 10 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A broad variation of reef-profiles with big blocks of hard and soft corals and a very rich fish life. 
Type of dive:   Drift-dive around a corner. 
Depth range:   2-30 meters. 
Marine life:  The corals here are some of the healthiest in the Maldives. The name Aquarium comes from the amount of fish you see at this site. The outside reef is frequently visited by eagle rays, tuna, and big jacks. White tip reef sharks are often seen resting on the sandy bottom. On the current side of some coral blocks are big schools of snappers and under the coral blocks divers can often find different kinds of moray eels.                      
Instructors’ comment:  This site lives up to its name and as divers we always hope to see the dolphins which sometimes are seen passing by in the deeper waters. 

Disco 
Rating:    Beginner. 
Location:   Eastside of Kanifinolhu, 15 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  The name is derived from the dive-site’s location just outside in the direction of our disco bar. It is a very popular beginner-rated site with exciting aquatic life. The outer reef edge starts as a shelf on a depth of 10 meters and slopes via big coral blocks and sand patches down to 30-35 meters. 
Type of diving:   Drift-dive along an outer reef edge. 
Depth range:   10-30 meters. 
Marine life:  Fusiliers and tunas in the blue water. A broad range of reef fish closer to the reef such as moorish idol, surgeon fish, sweet lips, damsel fish, puffer fish and more. Turtles and sharks are often seen. Coral life, see Instructors comment. 
Instructors’ comment:  “The most healthy corals I have seen in Maldives” was a marine biologist’s comment. Excellent site for night diving. 

Lion’s Point 
Rating:    Beginner. 
Location:   West side of Kanifinolhu. 5 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A beautiful inside reef formed as a drop-off wall which starts just under the surface and falls down to 30-35 meters. The reef is full of small caves and over-hangs where reef fish and invertebrates are hosted. 
Type of dive:   Slow drift-dive along a reef wall. 
Depth range:   1-30 meters. 
Marine life:  Here you find delicate reef life with lots of small citizens. All kinds of reef fish can be found here but what really makes this place interesting is its population of small invertebrates like sea fan, soft coral, wire coral, anemone, shrimp, lobster, crab, nudibranch and snail. Sleeping turtles and big wrasses are often seen during night dives. 
Instructors’ comment: A calm and nice place and the night-dives we do here are outstanding. 

Taburudhoo 
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   East of Taburudhoo, 20 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A sloping reef side from 5-25 meters with big coral blocks and a lot of soft corals. At the end of the area is a big and shallow reef platform  
Type of dive:   Slow drift dive along a reef side. 
Depth range:   5-25 meters. 
Marine life:  A lot of soft corals, eagle rays at the bigger coral blocks, lion fish scorpion fish, banner fish, puffer fish, big schools of snappers and turtles. 
Instructors’ comment:  A relaxing drift dive along colourful soft corals and a lot of fish. 

Middle Point 
Rating:    Advanced. 
Location:   South of Tari Village, 20 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:   A channel with beautiful coral formations and often strong current. 
Type of dive:   Often a fast drift dive along a bottom with big coral blocks. 
Depth range:   14-27 meters. 
Marine life:  Big healthy coral blocks and a lot of soft-corals. Many anemones and clown fish. Occasionally nurse sharks in the overhangs and schooling fish. 
Instructors’ comment:  Experienced divers can do a real fun and fascinating dive at this site. When an instructors returns from the Middle Point the others listen to his story with envy. 

  

Coral Garden 
Rating:    Beginner 
Location:   Northside of Taburudhoo, 20 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A big and shallow sandy bottom with coral-blocks. Normally only slight current if at all.  
Type of dive:                  Very relaxed and shallow dive in a calm area, descent and ascent  
along a reef slope 
Depth range:   2-18 meters. 
Marine life:                  Beautiful corals and a multitude of small reef fish among them. Turtles are often seen  
Instructors’ comment:  The site where we do the Open-Water part of the beginner-course but it is also worth a visit by more experienced divers. 

One Palm Reef 
Rating:    Beginner 
Location:   East of Gasfinolhu, 20 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A long reef side with a sloping profile down to 35-40 meters, big coral-rocks. 
Type of dive:   Slow drift-dive along a reef-side. 
Depth range:   8-30 meters. 
Marine life;  Here you will find a series of coral rocks at 15-25 meter, reef-fish including parrot fish, moorish idol, surgeon, angelfish and snapper gather here. Nurse sharks are occasionally seen under the ledges. Around the base of the rocks, goat fish are found rummaging in the sand and rubble. On a sand plateau at 20 meters on the south west side of the rocks you will see several white tip reef sharks. Turtles are often seen on top of the reef. 
Instructors’ comments: When you are diving here, do not forget to keep an eye out on the blue water. As it is an outside reef large fish species might pass by. 

Colosseum 
Rating:    Intermediate 
Location:   East-corner of Thulusdhoo, 30 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A reef corner, which starts as an outer reef and ends in a long channel. A broad variation of reef profiles with rocks and overhangs. 
Type of dive:   Drift dive around a reef corner.  
Depth range:   5-30 meters 
Marine life:  Beautiful formations with healthy corals, big pelagic fish are often seen and the best location to see the big schooling bumphead parrot fish, which can reach a size of 1.5 meters. Inside the channel are overhangs with a stunning growth of soft coral and many lobsters. 
Instructors’ comment:  The name comes from the semicircular cliff 40m. long and 2m. high. We usually hover over it and get one of our weekly high lights. 
    

   
H.P. Reef 
Rating:    Advanced. 
Location:   South of Girifushi, 20 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  H.P. is another exceptional dive site with a spectacular reef formation. Overhangs, caves, slopes, drop-offs, everything is there. The reef-top starts at 10 meters and falls down to 35-40 meters, and it is less than100 meters across. 
Type of dive:  Drift-dive in sometimes strong current with descent and ascent in free water. 
Depth range:   10-30 meters. 
Marine life:  Large schools of big eye and blue fin trevally, rainbow runner, barracuda, and dog tooth tuna make this reef a playground for pelagics. Sharks and eagle rays join in the action. Yellow fin and blue fusilier concentrate here in big schools. Together with octopus there is a broad variety of reef fish especially scorpion on top of the ‘thila’. Full of nice soft corals. 
Instructors’ comment:  We always plan dives here at slack tide. 

Devil’s Reef 
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   Northeast of Himmafushi, 25 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  Opposite from H.P. reef is another fantastic reef with drop-offs and big rocks. The reef is long and starts at one meter depth to drop fast to 40-45 meters                 
Type of dive:   Drift dive along a reef wall. 
Depth range:   1-30 meters. 
Marine life:  The really big rocks are covered with blue soft coral. Schooling snappers, eagle rays, sharks, morays are normal visitors here. At the reef-top you will find a beautiful coral garden. 
Instructors’ comment:  The place represents the opposite to its name, very pleasant, especially when a comfortable current carries you along the reef. 

   
Himmafushi Outside 
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   East of Himmafushi, 25 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  Outside reef with the top at 8 meters depth sloping down to 45 metres. At the north end a huge flat area between 15-20 meters. Coral rocks and overhangs. 
Type of dive:   Drift-dive. 
Depth range:   8-30 meters. 
Marine life:  Beautiful hard and soft corals, schooling pelagic fish at the north corner to Himmafushi Kandu. Under rocks and overhangs you can see honeycomb morays, stone fish, groupers, shrimps and fan corals. Turtles are frequent visitors. 
Instructors’ comment:  When a north drift takes us up to the corner, very often we see sharks and rays.  

Okobe Thila 
Rating:    Advanced. 
Location:   South east of Kani, 35 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  This spectacular dive site has many different features. It can be dived in different ways and it seems to be better and better every time. The reef has three sections, the smallest only 6 meters across, the bigger 50 meters in length. Reef formations like slopes, drop-offs, caves and overhangs can be found everywhere. 
Type of diving:   Reef dive, descent and ascent with a line. 
Depth range:   12-30 meters. 
Marine life:  The reef offers many hideaways for scorpion fish, lion fish, moray eels and invertebrates like feather star, sea fan, anemones, hydroids, shrimps, crabs, flatworms, nudibranch and sponges. Half tame napoleon wrasses, bat fish, barracuda, trevally, tuna, sharks, and turtles are often seen. 
Instructors’ comment:  One if not the best inside reef in this atoll. 

Manta Point  
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   South-east of Lankanfinolhu, 30 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A site known the world over for attracting large numbers of big manta rays during south west monsoon. The reef starts at 8 meters and slopes slowly down to more than 60 metres. Big rocks and caves are found in large numbers. An outside reef. 
Type of diving:   Drift-dive along a reef slope. 
Depth range:   5-30 meters. 
Marine life:  At 8 meters depth are several big rocks which is a giant cleaner station for the mantas. Cleaner wrasses working in pairs, can be seen swimming out to the hovering Mantas to remove old skin and parasites. Nurse sharks under the rocks, eagle rays, white tip reef sharks, napoleons and turtles are often seen.  Big gorgonians and soft corals in the caves. 
Instructors’ comment:  An easy access to an unforgettable moment. 
  

Nassimo Thila 
Rating:    Intermediate-advanced. 
Location:   South-west of Kani, 30 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  An oval shaped thila 100 meters across. Along the whole west side is a drop off wall with overhangs and caves, further out big pinnacles scattered randomly and on top of the thila a beautiful coral garden. 
Type of diving:   Drift-dive in sometimes-strong current, descent and ascent in free water. 
Depth range:   8-30 meters. 
Marine life:  Around the pinnacles are napoleons, big eye trevally, black snapper and barracudas. In the overhangs you find delicate blue soft coral, sea fans and tiger cowry. On the reef top are many species of grouper including the large flower cod, slender grouper and peacock rock cod.   
Instructors’ comment:  It is one of our best points in Male’ Atoll. With a favourable current and a good conservation of air a leisurely dive can be done along the entire length of the reef, weaving in and out of the coral peaks and along the overhangs before rising to the top of the reef. 

  
      
Furana North 
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   North of Furana, 40 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:   A big reef, top at 8 meters depth. 
Type of dive:   Thila, descent and ascent in free water. 
Depth range:   8-25 meters. 
Marine life:  An interesting reef with surprises like nurse sharks, mantas, eagle rays and even whale sharks. Beautiful coral rocks accommodate honeycomb moray eels, lion fish, schools of snappers and sweet lips. 
Instructors’ comment:  Because of its location at the outer reef edge, do not forget to keep an eye out on the blue waters looking for pelagics. 

  

Banana Reef 
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   South west of Furana, 45 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  Named after its shape, has big spectacular rocks, caves, deep gutters and overhangs.   
Type of dive:   Thila, descent and ascent along a reef slope. 
Depth range:   2-30 meters. 
Marine life:  An amazing scenery around the rocks with shark, barracuda, trevally, and black snapper. Schooling banner fish, big moray eels, groupers, cods are also common. On the top are some big table corals. 
Instructors’ comment:  The reef formation makes this place an underwater paradise for both fish and divers. 

  

Lion’s Head 
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   North side of Vadhoo channel, 80 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:  A fast falling reef side from 2-500 meters, with a prominent rock protruding at 10 meters. When shark feeding was allowed this was THE place, but even to date it is a highlight with beautiful caves and overhangs in shallow water. 
Type of dive:   Drift dive along a reef-side. 
Depth range:   2-30 meters. 
Marine life:   Sharks, eagle rays, big snappers, sting rays. 
Instructors’ comment:  A long nearly never ending drift dive, sometimes pretty fast. 

  

Maldive Victory 
Rating:    Advanced. 
Location:   South-west of Hulule Airport. 60 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:   A 110 meters cargo ship which sank in 1981. 
Type of dive:   Wreck dive, descent and ascent on a rope. 
Depth range:   16-30 meters. 
Marine life:  Located in a channel often flushed in strong current, the wreck has been a locale for plenty of fish and delicate coral life. Big schools of jacks and trevally frequently visit the wreck. 
Instructors’ comment:  The ship was soon stripped of its valuables but today has a higher value as a dive site. Sank on a Friday the 13th, it is bad luck, our luck. 

  

Blue Water  (Indian Ocean) 
Rating:    Intermediate. 
Location:   East of Kanifinolhu. 20 minutes by dhoni. 
Description:   Just blue water. 
Type of dive:   Drifting in the free ocean. 
Depth range:   1-30 meters 
Marine life:  Big and beautiful plankton in undisturbed water sometimes with big pelagic fish. 
Instructors’ comment:  Not a coral as far as you can see. Knowing that the sea bottom is nearly 1000 metres down, it is a very different dive. Place for surprises.
