Dhivehi is the official Maldivian language. However, almost every Maldivian can speak some English, and at Kani the management and staff are multi-national and multi-lingual.

Kani has an in-house doctor whom you can rely upon for medical help. In case of a scuba diving emergency, a decompression chamber is available on a neighbouring resort. Speedy transport can easily be arranged to Male’ where government and private hospitals provide advanced medical care.

Rufiyaa is the Maldivian currency but the US dollar is also legal tender. The rate is currently Rfs11.72 to US$1.00. At Kani, prices are calculated in US dollars. Dollars can be changed at shops and banks in Male’ for rufiyaas.

Straddling the equator, the Maldives enjoys sunshine throughout the year. The southwest monsoon from May to November brings welcome rain and sometimes rough seas. Even then, the sun seems to shine and the temperatures remain at an average of 28 to 31 degrees Celsius throughout the year.

Fast Fact

The Maldives is exclusively a Muslim country and the import by visitors of alcohol, narcotic drugs, dogs, pigs/pork products and pornography are forbidden. Don’t worry if you happen to have some duty-free alcohol with you; customs will store it safely in bond for collection when you leave. Anyway, Kani’s bars are so well stocked, you wouldn’t need to bring your own.

Narcotic drugs are strictly forbidden, and penalty for importing even for personal use is a heavy fine and life imprisonment.

Introduction

Entering the Maldives is easy - no visas are required. A 30-day entry permit is granted on arrival to all visitors with valid travel documents, including a ticket out of the Maldives.
