Maldivians have their own language, “Dhivehi” and their own script called “Thaana”. When spoken Dhivehi sounds similar to Sinhala, the language of the neighbouring island of Sri Lanka. When written from right to left across a page, it seems similar in appearance and characters to Arabic. Maldivians welcome efforts from foreigners trying to speak their language and make willing teachers.

Maldivians enjoy a celebration. Dancing to the rhythm of a pulsating traditional drum, or moving flowingly to the music created by rings on metal pots, is part of local culture. Laid back and relaxed, the lifestyle takes on a simplicity that is near idyllic. At the same time, the movers and the shakers are keeping ahead with the changing world, making modern music and technology as much a part of the Maldivian culture as the handbeating of tropical drums.
Located on ancient maritime trade routes, the Maldives has attracted visitors from the time man first sailed to explore and to trade. Early mariners, who landed in the Maldives, either by accident or design, were captivated by the islands and many settled in this tropical haven of peace. Maldivians have been unable to trace their origins to one single race. The nation has evolved into a smiling, friendly and welcoming people who form a tight knit and close community. The people were converted to Islam in the 12th century and the islands were occupied by the Portuguese for 17 years in the 16th century. In 1887 Maldives attained the status of a ‘British Protectorate’ and gained full independence in 1965. The Maldives became a Republic in 1968.

Maldives is at the crossroads of Asia and the Middle East, only four hours flying time from Dubai or Singapore, one hour from Colombo and nine hours from Europe.
